We are looking at a stay on Tavenui and at Qamea. These islands appeared to be in the path of the cyclone and from what I have read in the Fiji papers, received significant damage. My husband is a scuba diver and is looking forward to exploring new…

About me
John and I are originally from Hawaii and discovered Taveuni in the 80's. Taveuni reminded us of Hawaii of our youth that was lost before we could get tired of it. So we settled in Taveuni and run a small two cottage resort called Makaira.

Aloha and Bula Scott,
The Shark was an approximately 250 lb Bronze whaler that was caught and released on a casting rod and reel on a popper. The next day , which was even more amazing, like it couldn't get more amazing, was the same angler had one up at about the same size on a FLY ROD for around 2 hours that was just a hand stretch away from being released when it finally broke line.
No (smile) we are not a manufacturer we have a place called Makaira Resort, although I don't know if resort is the right term, we have two cottages that we rent out, we kind of fall between the cracks of what would be vacation cottages and a resort and one of our activities is Fishing Charters. When I get the time I will put up a more complete fishing blog and try and post you the story about that particular shark for your entertainment.
I bet you loved the diving on Taveuni, so many great dives including the White Wall. The next time you come make sure before you just exit the tunnel that you look up above and to the right and you will see a ledge which is a cleaning station. Sometimes big Groupers and other large fish are in there for a little bit of a cleanup, with mouths and gills gaping open and the cleaner fish in very precaurious positions while they are performing their duties. Everyone is so excited to see the Wall they breeze past and underneath that ledge without noticing.

Dear Roberta,

What magnificent fish! What type of shark was that on the line?

I clicked on the website and it linked to the Makaira manufacturer. Is this correct?

Thanks - Scott
