The Oldest Most Reliable Online Guide to Fiji

We hoped to going diving this morning, but stormy weather fouled our plans. Instead we enjoyed a lazy morning in our room. Today we have to check out, which is unfortunate because the staff at the Outrigger really spoiled us rotten :-)

At noon we headed out on the Sigatoa River Safari. Our guide for the river portion of the tour was Joshua "Captain Jack" Ratukuna. Joshua is an entertaining and knowledgeable guide. During the boat ride, which is a good bit of fun in its own right, Joshua explained key points in Fijian history, and the history of the villages in Sigatoka Valley. He explained that this valley is known as Viti Levu’s salad bowl, and supplies most of the fresh fruit and vegetables to the hotels and restaurants. Along the way villagers wade into the river on horseback and wave. We are treated to beautiful valley and mountain views.

After about 30 minutes we arrive at the village. We are greeted at the shore by dozens of smiling and waving women and children. Our guide in the village is Mark, an affable man who promises we will "see, experience, drink and live" his culture in the village. A these images and video clips will attest, he is a man of his word!

The cava drinking ceremony was deeply fulfilling experience. After the ceremony we had a great time dancing with the villagers and playing with the children who were running about with a rugby ball. One of the kids asked for our names, and I was followed for the next 10 minutes by calls of, "Dan! Take my picture!" I obliged :-) Mark inquired about the Fijian phrases that I was practicing on people in the village. I explained that I had memorized a few phrases before our visit. Mark was kind enough to assist with pronunciation, which was greatly appreciated. His compliment about my efforts is evidence of the extent of Fijian generosity :-)

On the way back Captain Jack executed a number of sharp spins, which elicited laughs and screams from his passengers. By the time we returned people on the outside of the boat looked as if they had swam back from the village. A good time was had by all.

The Sigatoka River Safari was definitely one of the highlights to date.

Upon return, we checked into Bedarra Beach Inn and had a chat with Alex and Alice from Dive Away Fiji at the bar. We make plans to meet Alice the following day for a spicy curry and a visit to the local school she is supporting. The bar seems to be very popular, with friendly bar tenders pouring stiff drinks. Before heading back to our room we enjoyed a late dinner at the restaurant. Mika's kebabs in a cream mint sauce were particularly good.

Bedarra provides good value for the price. The immaculately clean rooms are spacious and pleasant. We enjoyed a rum, ginger and lime and hit the bed like rocks.
